Gerald, Domestic Shorthair For Adoption In Toronto, Ontario

Location:
Toronto, ON
Description:

Gerald is a very gentle round boy. He likely lived in a colony at some point in his life but really loves having humans around. He can be quite shy at first and is easily spooked, but with some patience and loads of treats he will be putty in your hands. He makes for an excellent work from home buddy and will sit on the floor next to you for hours at a time. If he starts to aggressively headbutt your legs it means it is time for pets. Gerald loves chin scratches and will flop onto his side and make biscuits if done correctly. See attached video for evidence. It's adorable. He has a cute, croaky little meow that he uses to alert you to the fact that it is food time but otherwise he is pretty quiet. He hangs out in his carrier/bed during the day but is sociable in the mornings and evenings (aka meal times). He is afraid of all toys as far as we can tell. We have also never seen him jump. He is a terrestrial boy. It's tricky to take him to the vet as he panics when he is picked up. We've found he does very well with the commonly prescribed sedative medication gabapentin to help him relax before visits. As per the staff at the clinic he is actually quite sweet (if scared) when he gets there.Gerald has shown a lot of affection towards our two young cats but gets a little overwhelmed with their energy. When he first moved in with us just over 2 months ago he would hardly leave his carrier. He is much more confident now, exploring the house and following us around. He is still scared of new people, loud noises and fast movements and needs a little alone time to recover afterwards. Offering him some Churu's really speeds up this process!Gerald would thrive in a home with another friendly adult cat and patient owners. He is nervous at first but is so sweet and affectionate once he is warmed up. In a quiet, stable home Gerald would be a very loving companion.Gerald is negative for FIV and feline leukemia. Like all ACR cats, Gerald has been treated for fleas and parasites. In April 2024, Gerald had a dental cleaning and extraction of two teeth. To check out some videos of Gerald loving head scratches, please follow these links:https://vimeo.com/942966357?share=copyhttps://vimeo.com/942966352?share=copyAdoption process If you are thinking of adopting a cat or kitten, please contact us. Annex Cat Rescue has matched over 1000 cats and kittens with good adoptive homes since our group started! Annex Cat Rescue cats live in real homes with our foster volunteers -- not in cages! This way, the cats live in normal homes and receive good food and medical care -- and lots of personal attention. We get to know each cat, so we can help you find the best cat for you. It's kind of like a kitty match-making service! All of our cats are vaccinated, have been de-wormed, and are spayed or neutered once they reach six months of age. We are always available if you have questions or concerns as your new cat is adjusting to your home. Here is our adoption process: Please leave a voice mail or email. One of our Adoption Team volunteers will contact you to find out more about the kind of kitty you are looking for. We will suggest which of our cats might be the best match for you, and put you in touch with a few foster homes for you to contact. You can go and visit the cat in the foster home and see if you think it's a match. If you fall in love on the spot (so easy with kitties!) we ask you to go home and think about it overnight, since it's an important decision for you and for the kitty. Then, if it's a match, you can bring your cat carrier (and the adoption fee -- which is modest and does not cover all of our expenses) then take your kitty home! We ask all adopters to sign our adoption agreement, which just sets out some basics so we all understand our roles, with the kitty's best interests first and foremost! A day or two later, we'll call you to make sure all is well and provide any suggestions that might be helpful, if needed. The Annex Cat Rescue's motto is "Cat Adoption with a Difference." If the adoption does not work out (a rare occurrence, in part due to our excellent "match-making"!), whatever the reason, the cat will always be welcomed back to our organization. We want the best for our kitties! Please contact us today!Shelter locationThe Annex Cat Rescue is a grassroots community organization. We are 100% non-paid volunteer-run. Our organization attempts to make a real difference for the homeless, stray and abandoned cats in this city through direct intervention and education. Every day, many people turn to us for help when Toronto Animal Services cannot. ACR does *not* run an animal shelter. All of our cats/kittens live in volunteer foster homes across Toronto where they are allowed to blossom and grow in a "home" environment (rather than in cages), and where they receive individual attention and love. While this prevents possible behavioural problems associated with caging animals, this also allows us to get to know each animal intimately and thus we can make excellent matches with adopters. Potential adopters are required to make appointments to view the animals in their respective homes. Our organization is "no kill". This means that cats in our care remain in foster homes are not euthanized (except for dire humane reasons). City shelters do not have such a policy.
